From Hotelcore to Gastfreund: why we named ourselves after a feeling no English word can capture

A guest who doesn’t speak the local language checks into a hotel. The receptionist doesn’t speak theirs either. And yet: a smile, a gesture, a glass of water placed on the counter without being asked. The guest knows immediately: I’m welcome here. Not a single shared word was needed. The feeling was unmistakable.

There’s a word for that feeling. But it’s not in English. It’s German: Gastfreundschaft. It’s also why we’re called Gastfreund for years in the DACH Market and we only operated internationally under the name Hotelcore. A strong name, a clear market position. But the more we worked with hotels, campsites and care homes across Europe, the more we felt the gap between what the name said and what we actually stood for. Hotelcore described an industry. Gastfreund describes a relationship.  That’s the one we wanted to be named after. That’s why we rebranded to Gastfreund in July 2026 – a name that says exactly what we’ve always stood for.

What does Gastfreundschaft actually mean?

Gastfreundschaft (pronounced gast-froyn-shaft) is a compound of two German words: Gast, meaning guest, and Freundschaft, meaning friendship. Literally: the friendship extended to a guest. The idea that someone who arrives as a stranger deserves to be treated like a friend.

That’s a meaningful distinction. A guest is, by definition, someone you don’t yet know. Gastfreundschaft says: that doesn’t matter. The warmth comes first.

The concept isn’t specific to hotels. It applies anywhere people meet: on campsites, in care homes, in restaurants, in lobbies. Wherever someone is a host and someone else is a guest, Gastfreundschaft is either present or absent. You can feel the difference the moment you walk in.

Why “hospitality” doesn’t quite cover it

English has “hospitality”. French has “hospitalité”. Italian has “ospitalità”. All three come from the Latin hospes, which meant both host and stranger at the same time. They describe a function, a sector, an industry. “Hospitality management”. “The hospitality business”. Useful terms. Operational ones.

What they don’t quite capture is the relational quality of the German word. Gastfreundschaft isn’t about what you do for a guest. It’s about how you see them. As someone worth extending friendship to, before they’ve done anything to earn it.

That shift, from service delivery to genuine human regard, is subtle. But guests notice it. And in an industry where experiences are increasingly homogenised, it’s often the only thing that actually differentiates a property.

What happens to Gastfreundschaft when hotels go digital?

Digital transformation in hospitality has had a reputation problem, and not without reason. Self-check-in kiosks nobody explained. Guest apps nobody downloaded. Screens instead of people. The impression took hold: digitising means distancing.

That’s true when technology is used to replace human contact. It’s not true when technology creates the conditions for more of it.

The question isn’t digital or personal. It’s: which digital tools give your team more time to be present? Which tasks can run automatically so your staff can do what no software will ever replicate: make someone feel genuinely welcome?

How does Gastfreund translate this into technology?

The Guest App by Gastfreund isn’t a digital noticeboard. It’s the extended arm of the host: available when the guest needs it, in the language they speak, with information that’s actually relevant to their stay.

When an international guest wants to know at 10 pm where the nearest beach access is, nobody at the front desk speaks their language at that hour. The Guest App does; automatically, in the guest’s own language. And the receptionist has more time the next morning to greet them properly.

The AI assistant built into the Gastfreund platform works on the same principle. It handles routine queries around the clock, filters, escalates, and takes the pressure off. Not to make the team disappear, but to let them focus on what technology isn’t built for: real human contact.

Key figures: Palace Hotel Zandvoort (verified)

83% of table reservations via the Guest App: Guests book directly through the app instead of calling or emailing the front desk.

15 hours less manual work per month: Saved on reservations and housekeeping coordination alone.

3 languages served automatically: International guests find everything they need without asking: no language barrier, no friction.

7,200 app sessions per month: Guests actively use the Guest App for information, bookings and self-service.

“I think our app is really great. It’s clear, easy to use and available in several languages — so every guest benefits. We highlight it at check-in because it answers so many questions directly and makes the stay noticeably smoother.”

Gastfreundschaft as a global standard, not a German niche concept

From Hotelcore to Gastfreund: why a name change is a values statement

International travel is growing. Guests arrive from more countries, speak more languages, and expect more than they did a decade ago. At the same time, staffing pressure in hospitality has never been higher. Front desks are stretched. Teams are smaller. The gap between what guests expect and what properties can deliver is widening.

This is exactly where Gastfreundschaft stops being a cultural concept and becomes an operational one. Properties that genuinely want to meet their guests, not just process them, need systems that make it possible: tools that handle the routine so the team can handle the relationship.

We’ve been building those tools for the DACH hospitality market for over a decade, as Hotelcore internationally, now as Gastfreund worldwide. The name change wasn’t a rebranding exercise. It was a decision to let go of a name that described what we do and choose one that describes what we believe: that every guest deserves to be treated like a friend. That commitment doesn’t change depending on the language, the country or the property type. It’s the reason we exist.

Gastfreundschaft doesn’t have an English equivalent. But the feeling it describes is universal. That’s why we’re here.

Great hospitality isn’t a service level. It’s a posture: the decision to treat every arriving stranger as someone worth genuine attention. Gastfreundschaft is the German word for that posture. We’re Gastfreund, and we build the technology to make it sustainable, at scale, in any language.
